An Undercurrent
I want to understand
the largeness of
our essential misunderstandings.
I want to know
my lacking is
vast enough
for your search.
For I think
you see in me both
what you need and
what you do not.
And I’ve divined
the one thing
that can counter
the modern rot:
For, now that we know
the old center was not,
there’s still an honesty never heeded,
an undercurrent that cannot stop
Grace
Tremble just a little:
you have earned a gentle touch.
Though our ending is tomorrow,
we have this our fibrous trust.
Memory may be brittle;
still alight we touch.
