A Taste of War

At my favorite cafe
now everything will have
a strange taste.
Coffee will be bitter
from the tears of children
from Bucha,
and the cream will be salty
from Mariupol defenders’ blood.
And the fragments of bombs,
which broke Chernihiv and Kharkiv,
will squeak on your teeth every time.
At my favorite café
I’ll look back and won’t see
the familiar faces
of relatives.
In my favorite café,
please, take my hand
and say that you love me…
As before the war.

У моєму улюбленому кафе
все тепер матиме дивний смак:
кава гірчитиме
від сліз дітей з Бучі,
а вершки стануть солоними
від крові захисників Маріуполя.
І на зубах щоразу рипітимуть
уламки снарядів,
що розривали Чернігів і Харків.
У моєму улюбленому кафе
я озирнуся і не побачу
знайомих облич,
що були рідними.
У моєму улюбленому кафе, прошу,
візьми мене за руку
і скажи, що кохаєш.
Як до війни…

When This Damned War is Over…
.
When this damned war is over,
I’ll want to be again
a tender romantic girl,
to write fairy-tales
about the prince charming
and drink cocoa
with marshmallows.
When this damned war is over,
I’ll wear my best dress
to walk the calm streets
of my city
and delight in the evening sky
the color of mint candies.
When this damned war is over,
I’ll leave off shuddering
from loud sounds
and start dreaming
about the texts of
my future novels.
When this damned war is over,
I would like to be again
a tender romantic girl…
If I ever can.

Коли скінчиться ця клята війна
Коли скінчиться ця клята війна,
я знов хочу стати
ніжною романтичною дівчинкою.
Писати історії
про прекрасних принців
і пити какао з зефірками.
Коли скінчиться ця клята війна,
я одягну найкращу сукню,
щоб гуляти тихими вуличками
свого міста
і милуватися вечірнім небом
кольору м’ятних цукерок.
Коли скінчиться ця клята війна,
я перестану здригатися
від гучних звуків
і почну бачити уві сні
сюжети майбутніх романів.
Коли скінчиться ця клята війна,
я знов хочу стати
ніжною романтичною дівчинкою…
Якщо зможу.

Olena Tereshchenko lives in Chernihiv, Ukraine. She writes poetry and prose for children and adults and works mainly in the genre of fantasy and adventure literature. She works at volunteer literary projects for children and youth. She is also the founder of Chernihiv Fantasy Literary Club for young writers. Her published books are: “The Walks with the Ghosts: Mystical Legends of Chernihiv Region” (2012), “Semargl on the Windowsill” (2020), “Dragon is Wanted!” (2021), co-author project. She has also published short stories in literary magazines and thematic collections. She is the winner of “Koronatsiya Slova” –”Coronation of the Word” (2017, 2020, 2021), and the Irpin Literary Award (2020).
