Vitalii Naida: Translated by Olena Stativka

An Alarm Rang Out in the Sky
.

An alarm rang out in the sky
In the basement, under the missiles’ noise
The Baby’s mother collects
crumbs of biscuits from the floor.
Over there, under the “Grad” fire
An ambulance rushes to the city,
Shells fly into the house,
Hand shakes nervously.
And we still do not give up:
At the front and in every soul,
We laugh through tears and sorrow,
True, this is our engine!
We are faithful to honor and law,
All our people are behind us!
Our police shoulder straps
Protect humanity’s freedoms!
We are on guard. We cannot be broken:
No bullets, no «Grad,» nothing!
Our job is to defend the people
Without any “no” and “if”!

.

.

Evening Falls on the City

Evening falls on the city –
So once loved this time:
Movies and cafes, little ones laugh –
We forgot all this at once!
And no more bright light now,
Everything becomes dark and alien,
Only in darkness is solitary prayer
Protects people from shells.
But in the dark, good only burns
A real open fire,
That helps everyone around
By candle light under the “Grad” rain.
You can’t see the beauty of make-up here,
Neither diamonds nor gold rings –
In the dark, you can eat porridge
In the circle of natives, really close ones!
.
