Olha Kalinina: Translated by Ella Yevtushenko and Artemii Kalinin

Explosions

The sounds fill up the air
into moments when you don’t expect it
though you always feel
that something is about to happen
but still
sounds fill up the room
and the numb question of what that was
echoing from the ceiling
and rolling on the floor to the doors
sound fills up my head
I lean against the door jamb
and listen listen listen
to the silence of the city
after

.

Windows

The teeth of war were pulled out
they could still grow
but maturity
knocked on the door
like an unexpected guest
broke the locks
instead, and
brought some wrap
to cover the windows
like corpses
that won’t get up.

.
